Dr Poobalasingham
Consultant Anaesthetist
Dr Poobalasingham is Consultant Anaesthetist at the North Middlesex University NHS Trust. He has worked there for 30 years. He has wide experience in all fields of anaesthesia with a special interest in regional block techniques.
Regional blockage is a technique where local anaesthetic is injected around nerve trunks supplying an area such as the hand, foot or shoulder.
Once performed, the patient either does not need a general anaesthetic at all, or can have a very light anaesthetic. Furthermore, the block remains effective for at least 8 hours, so the patient has almost no pain in the immediate aftermath of the surgery.
Dr Poobalasingham has been working with Mr Kurer for the last 12 years and routinely performs shoulder blockade, with many patients opting to remain awake or lightly sedated for their surgery.
Regional blockade also permits patients who are unfit for general anaesthetic because of heart or chest problems, to still have shoulder operations including shoulder joint replacement. |
